Essentials You Need to Know to Help You with Winter Hair Care

As the cold weather sets in, it’s not just your skin that needs extra attention – your hair can suffer, too.

Winter air is notoriously harsh, both outdoors and indoors, leaving hair dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. From frizz control to scalp care, small changes to your hair care routine can make a big difference in keeping your locks looking shiny, healthy, and full of life.

Here are the essentials you need to know to care for your hair through the winter months.

Keep Your Hair Hydrated

One of the biggest challenges in winter is keeping your hair hydrated. The cold air outside combined with central heating indoors sucks the moisture out of your strands, leaving them dull and lifeless.

To combat this, switch to a hydrating shampoo and conditioner designed to lock in moisture. Look for ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, or glycerin, which are known for their nourishing properties.

Incorporating a deep conditioning mask into your routine once a week will give your hair the extra moisture boost it needs. Leave the mask on for at least 10-20 minutes so your hair can soak up all the goodness.

For those with very dry or frizzy hair, using a leave-in conditioner or lightweight hair oil daily will help to seal in moisture and keep your hair feeling soft.

Wash Less, Protect More

Overwashing your hair can strip it of natural oils that are essential for keeping it healthy, especially during winter.

While it might be tempting to wash frequently due to frizz or an itchy scalp, it’s best to limit hair washing to two or three times a week. If your hair feels greasy in between washes, try using a dry shampoo to absorb excess oil and add volume.

When you do wash your hair, avoid using hot water. Although it may feel comforting in the cold, hot water can weaken your hair and dry out your scalp. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and finish with a cool rinse to help seal the hair cuticle.

Tame Winter Frizz

Frizz is a common problem during winter, thanks to the combination of cold, dry air and damp conditions. The result? Hair that looks poofy, unmanageable, and dull.

To keep frizz under control, apply a smoothing serum or anti-frizz cream after washing your hair. Products with argan oil or silicone are particularly effective at keeping your hair sleek and polished.

Also, drying your hair with a microfibre towel instead of a standard towel can also help, as microfibre creates less friction and reduces frizz. If your hair tends to tangle, gently detangle it using a wide-tooth comb while it’s still damp. Avoid brushing dry hair, as this can make frizz even worse.

Protect Your Hair from the Elements

Harsh winter winds, freezing temperatures, and the friction caused by hats and scarves can all damage your hair. The constant rubbing can lead to split ends, breakage, and tangles.

To protect your hair, wear a friction reducing hat or scarf when stepping outside. Silk or satin-lined hats are ideal as they prevent static and reduce damage compared to wool or cotton materials.

If you use heat styling tools like straighteners, curling irons, or hair dryers, make sure to apply a heat protectant spray before styling to minimise the damage caused by high temperatures.

Tying your hair in a loose braid or bun can also help prevent tangling when you’re wearing scarves or coats.

Care for Your Scalp

Dry, itchy scalps are another common winter problem. The colder months can cause flakiness and irritation, making your scalp feel uncomfortable and leaving visible flakes on your hair and clothing.

To keep your scalp healthy, try massaging it weekly with nourishing oils like coconut, almond, or jojoba oil. This not only hydrates the scalp but also improves blood circulation, encouraging healthy hair growth.

Use gentle, sulphate-free shampoos to avoid further drying out your scalp. If you notice persistent flakiness, a scalp scrub can help exfoliate dead skin, but be sure to follow up with a moisturising treatment to maintain balance.

Regular Trims to Prevent Breakage

Winter makes hair more prone to dryness and breakage, which means split ends can become more noticeable. Regular trims are an essential part of winter hair care to keep your hair looking fresh and healthy.

Aim to visit your hairdresser every six to eight weeks to remove split ends and prevent further damage. If you’re hesitant about losing length, ask for a light trim or ‘dusting,’ which focuses only on removing the damaged tips while maintaining your hair’s overall length.

Go Easy on Heat Styling

While heat styling can feel like a quick fix for winter frizz and dullness, using straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers too often can cause significant damage. Excess heat weakens the hair, leading to dryness and breakage.

Instead, embrace your natural texture with softer, low-maintenance hairstyles like braids, buns, or soft waves. Allow your hair to air dry whenever possible. If you must blow-dry, use the cool setting to reduce heat damage and finish with a blast of cold air to seal the cuticle and add shine.

Switching to a satin or silk pillowcase can also help reduce overnight friction, preventing tangles and split ends.

Feed Your Hair from Within

Healthy hair starts with a healthy body, so what you eat can have a significant impact on the condition of your hair. During winter, focus on nourishing your hair from the inside out by eating a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients.

Incorporate foods like salmon, nuts, avocados, eggs, and spinach, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, biotin, and zinc. These nutrients help strengthen your hair and promote shine.

What’s more, staying hydrated is equally important, as drinking plenty of water keeps your hair and scalp moisturised. If you feel you’re not getting enough nutrients through food, consider taking a hair-friendly supplement for added support.
